It takes a lot to get your coffee from the field to your cup. If you are intrigued as to how the whole process works you can join Shangri-la Atitlan for a coffee tour.
Your tour will begin with a walk into the valley of San Marcos where your will see how local coffee is grown and depending on the season you will have the chance to pick and taste the ripe coffee berries. Harvest season is usually between late November and late March, this varies each year depending on the annual climate.
After growing and harvesting the next step is to learn about the process of how the berries are washed, dried and prepared for roasting (a demonstration of this part is only possible during harvest season).
And finally you will get to learn about the art of roasting, the different methods, roast grades and watch a batch of coffee go from green to the oven.
How and when?
Coffee tours are available Monday-Friday by appointment only starting at 9am or 2pm. A minimum of two people, with discounts for larger groups.
